Background:
Trowa Barton
Personality:
There are really two parts to Trowa's personality, the one that he starts the series with and what his personality becomes after a major life event.
If a prop could be a metaphor for a character's personality, Trowa's would have to be his mask. Trowa clearly tried to live behind a mask to keep his emotions from being seen. He tended to think them weak, condemning others' abilities at being soldiers when they showed too much emotion. Like most of the other pilots, in the beginning, it was just a mission to him. Given his past, this was unsurprising. That blank look coupled with what he’d learned made him a very ruthless person, using statements like "Now that you've seen me, I can't let you live" with no more emotion than one would give to delivering a weather report and even firing on suspected teammates.
However, try as he might, there were cracks even early on. When he and Quatre first meet, he initially fought Quatre. When the other pilot emerged from the Gundam to protest them fighting each other, thus making himself vulnerable to attack, Trowa emerged from his Gundam and surrendered to Quatre - an odd gesture that Quatre pointed out. He also started to become annoyed when Quatre made another appearance as they are both heading to the New Edwards Base. He didn’t act on it, but it was clear on his face.
As the series progress, his own feelings became more and more obvious, though he didn't necessarily know what to do with them at times. After Heero self-detonated Wing and told Trowa to follow his emotions, Trowa followed literally and tried self-detonating. However, Catherine yelled at him and by his own admission, her crying is what stopped him. While helping Heero, he expressed concern for Heero's condition such as telling him he had to take care of himself.
In perhaps one of the more telling actions, he showed so much concern for Heero's welfare in the fight with Zechs that he actually reconfigured his own Gundam to make it easier for him. This came only hours after a conversation where Heero apologized for the fact that he was using another pilot's Gundam and Trowa told him that he better hurry up and get used to it.
It was clear that he was beginning to change. When infiltrating OZ, one of his tests was to blow up Duo's Gundam Deathscythe. He did it easily with no physiological changes - OZ was monitoring him to see - but he looked up and saw tears floating through the cockpit. This was a sight that surprised him.
What does all of this show about Trowa?
There was some level of vanity in his actions, not wanting to be seen as having emotions. He also frequently exhibited hypocritical tendencies. He condemned OZ soldiers for being weak then helped Heero. He also criticized Duo and Heero for standing too close, to which one could question how close Heavyarms and Sandrock were at that moment.
At the same time, he did show compassion. He also realized how his actions hurt others even if he couldn't show it. This was perhaps the start of some conflicting emotions in him. When he captured Heero, a very slight change showed his expression softening. He also slipped information between the scientists and Duo and Wufei under the guise of punching Duo for arguing with him.
With Quatre's return to the battlefield, Trowa now showed he was too trusting of his teammates. He was positive that the unidentified Gundam - associated with Sandrock - was Quatre and that with the near completion of Gundams Deathscythe Hell and Altron, that the five of them were going to team up again and take on OZ. He didn’t listen to Heero’s warning. Ignoring Quatre's warning to stay back and was fired upon. Trowa’s response - "This isn't like you." Trowa ultimately sacrificed himself to save Heero, throwing his damaged mobile suit in from of Wing Zero's attack. Rather than listening to Quatre's demand to get out of the mobile suit, he piloted it into space, giving Quatre a speech, finally understanding their position in the world. Then he pleaded with Quatre, hoping something would bring him back to himself.
And then the Vayeate exploded...
Trowa made his reappearance at the same circus he had been with on Earth. However, he had no memories. It was clear that he was completely unsure of himself at this point, seeking approval from Catherine. However, Quatre's arrival at the circus to apologize seemed to awaken something in him, giving him a small piece of his memory back. When the colony was attacked, initially Trowa panicked but when Catherine started crying and telling Quatre she didn't want to lose anyone else, her tears seemed to have affected him for a second time as he told her he would protect her. He then decided to join Quatre in space, not before promising Catherine that he would come back alive.
This new protective side quickly transferred to Quatre and Noin, coupled with a reckless side. When the shuttle was fired upon and damaged, Trowa immediately took one of the shuttle's Tauruses and went out to fight with no knowledge he was aware of regarding piloting experience, which he told them he would remember. Sure enough, he did subconsciously remember piloting and was able to take on the enemy mobile suits.
He also jumped in Wing Zero without a thought to go save Catherine. This action nearly drove him insane as the Zero system has the tendency to overload the pilot. However, Quatre came to stop and it was Quatre who brought his memory back to him.
Powers:
Trowa is a newtype with more limited abilities. One of his newtype abilities is his ability to communicate with animals, such as befriending a lion that had been roaring at him by putting his hand in the cage and saying "hello". Another ability that is probably a combination of newtype ability and training is his almost inhuman athleticism, including strength and reaction time. He works as an acrobat at the circus and several points during the series, leaps into the air to a height most people wouldn't be able to reach, spins in mid-air, and lands on his feet. He was also able to draw his gun and aim it to shoot before an apple he had been holding hit the ground.
One final and very specific ability, he has very limited empathic abilities. Whereas his teammate Quatre can feel just about anyone with his empathic abilities, Trowa seems to sense Quatre in return.
